Why You Need a Thai Driver's Licence
While tourists are officially permitted to drive using a valid International Driving Permit (IDP), local regulations and insurance policies change once you stay longer. If you plan to drive in Thailand for more than 60 days, or if you hold a long-term visa, you are legally required to obtain a Thai driver's licence. Please note that to drive both cars and motorcycles, you must hold two separate Thai licences β one for each vehicle type.
β οΈ The 60-Day Rule & Insurance Risks: Many expats and long-term tourists are unaware of this rule. After 60 days of continuous stay in Thailand (or as soon as you hold a long-term visa), Thai authorities and insurance companies typically consider you a resident rather than a tourist. If you are involved in an accident after this period while only holding an IDP, your health and vehicle insurance may be completely voided. The insurance company can claim you were driving without a valid local licence β leaving you personally liable for all damages, medical bills, and legal consequences.
Why Else Is a Thai Driver's Licence So Important?
Beyond the crucial insurance protection, holding a local driver's licence makes your daily life in Thailand significantly easier:
- When stopped at police checkpoints, presenting a Thai licence completely changes the interaction β local authorities treat you as a respectful resident, not just a passing tourist
- Serves as a valid official ID for domestic flights
- Grants you the local entry price at many national parks
- Useful when dealing with banks and other official institutions

Option 2: Bangkok DLT β Fast Track β Recommended
Suitable for everyone, including those on Short-Term Tourist Visas or Visa Exemptions. Skip the long Pattaya waiting lists! π New Licence (No Previous Driving Licence)
If you do not currently hold any valid driver's licence from your home country, you will need to apply for a new Thai licence from scratch.
Please note that this process requires mandatory attendance at a certified driving school:
- 1 licence type (Car OR Motorcycle): You must complete a 2-full-day course
- Both licences (Car AND Motorcycle): You must attend the course for 4 full days
After completing the driving school, the process concludes with a driving theory test and a practical driving test at the DLT office.
Standard Requirements for a New Licence
- Valid passport with current visa (minimum Tourist Visa)
- Proof of Thai address (TM30 / rental contract)
- Medical certificate (we arrange this)
- Passing the vision, reaction, theory, and practical tests at the DLT

We regularly assist clients who come to us after being scammed, having lost their money or, worse, facing severe legal trouble for holding unofficial or non-Thai documents. Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use my foreign licence in Thailand?
Yes, but only if you hold a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) and for no more than 60 days. After 60 days, or if you hold a long-term visa, you are legally required to have a Thai driver's licence. Without it, your insurance may be voided in the event of an accident.
Which option is faster β Pattaya or Bangkok?
Bangkok is significantly faster. The Bangkok Fast Track option is typically completed in just one day with no second visit required. The Pattaya option requires two separate visits, with the second one typically scheduled 1β2 months after the first.
Can I get a licence if I'm on a Tourist Visa?
Yes! While applying on your own at the DLT on a short-term Tourist Visa or Visa Exemption can be highly complicated or even rejected, our agency can process it for you right here in Pattaya or in Bangkok using our Fast Track service.
Do I need a separate licence for a motorbike and a car?
Yes. To legally drive both, you need two separate Thai licences β one for motorcycles and one for cars. We can arrange both together for 7,900 THB (Pattaya) or 8,900 THB (Bangkok Fast Track).
What if my foreign licence is not in English?
No difficulty β we can arrange an official certified translation for you. Just let us know and we will include this in your application preparation.
How long is the new Thai driving licence valid?
Your first Thai driving licence is a temporary 2-year licence. After 2 years, provided you hold a long-term visa (such as Non-O, Non-OA, Non-B, or ED) valid for at least 1 year, you can renew it to a 5-year licence. After that, it is renewable every 5 years.
What tests do I need to pass for a new Thai licence?
You need to pass several aptitude tests at the DLT: colour blindness, depth perception, reaction time, and peripheral vision β as well as a theory test and a practical driving test.
